'Tali’s Baby Diary' has begun production and we are like so excited
Flashback to 2017 when, while busy crashing on my cousin’s couch and grinding for an unpaid internship, I put on a new Showmax series, Tali’s Wedding Diary, to keep me company while I worked late.
I binged all 8 episodes in one go and have since been obsessed with the series, so imagine my delight when I heard production on season two has officially begun in the Mother City.
The mockumentary series, which is also Showmax’s first ever original show, broke records when it first premiered three years ago and also won big at the 2019 South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) as the most awarded comedy.
The series, which stars Suzelle DIY actress Julia Anastasopoulos, follows Joburg socialite Tali Shapiro as she prepares to marry fiance and aspiring property tycoon Darren Nudelman (Anton Taylor).
They are joined by a colourful ensemble cast including comedian Glen Biderman-Pam as Darren’s bestie and business partner Rael Rosen, Lara Toselli as Tali’s frenemy and fellow bride Gabi, Guy De Lancey as her father Les Shapiro, Kate Normington as her drama queen mom Michelle, and Anastasopoulos’ real-life sister Stephanie as Tali’s sister Mikaela.
From getting trapped in her aspirationally-tiny wedding dress to stalking another bride while trying to poach her wedding venue and accidentally including a penis in her wedding logo design, I absolutely loved Tali and all her hijinks, so I can’t wait to see what’s in store for season two.
According to early reports, Tali’s Baby Diary will see Tali and Darren navigate an unexpected pregnancy which forces Tali to reevaluate her Insta-influencer lifestyle, while Darren and Rael continue to work on their property business GoldProp. According to Channel24, “as the nine-month clock ticks down, Tali and the boys are forced to face the bigger questions about life, love and parenthood.”
Season two will also add to the cast with the inclusion of local stars Coconut Kelz, Danny K, Kate Pinchuck, Deon Lotz, Schalk Bezuidenhout and Siv Ngesi among others.
The first season of the show was inspired by Anastasopoulos’ own wedding to Ari Kruger, her partner and the co-creator and director both Tali’s Wedding Diary and SuzelleDIY. Similarly, Tali’s Baby Diary is inspired by the birth of Julia and Ari’s daughter Zoe in 2018.
