Mindy Kaling shares an update on 'Legally Blonde' 3
And we. are. so. excited.
It’s been like two years since Reese Witherspoon confirmed that Legally Blonde 3 is actually going ahead, and then by some miracle managed to top that amazing announcement by confirming Mindy Kaling is writing the script (alongside Dan Goor).
There haven’t been a ton of updates since then so we were thrilled to hear Kaling’s comments about the latest film in the iconic franchise during an interview with Good Morning America earlier this week.
When asked about how she came to join the production, Kaling touched on her friendship with Witherspoon, with whom she starred in A Wrinkle in Time and The Morning Show.
“I have been working with her on a couple movies, and we’ve been friends for a while and I have always quoted the movies to her. I was that annoying friend that would be like, ‘bend and snap’ to her.”
One thing led to another and Witherspoon reached out to Kaling in 2018 when she decided she wanted to revisit the role of Elle Woods, 17 years after the first film was released.
“I was nervous because the movie is so iconic. But then I thought, it’d be really fun to see that character in her 40s. What is Elle Woods dealing with as a 41-year-old woman? And it’s been really funny to write. I’m working on it with my friend Dan and I think it’s going to be a great movie for Reese and people are going to love to see her in this part.”
The original film became a cult classic after its release in 2001, spurring a million fashion inspo pages, plenty of quotable moments, an obsession with chihuahuas long before Paris Hilton was famous, and even inspired a broadway musical (I saw it, I loved it).
The sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde was released in 2003, but we can’t say it lived up to the hype. That said, we can’t wait to see what a more mature (and hopefully still pink-obsessed) Elle Woods will be like!
The third installment in the series will likely be released in 2022, so we’ll be counting the days and obsessing over it until then!
