South African musician Elaine signs with Columbia Records
She’s the one ;)
South African singer and songwriter Elaine has been on fire in recent months, during which she’s become one of the country’s most streamed musicians, and now she’s signed with a major international label!
The 21-year-old Wits University law student (real name Ndivhuwo Elaine Mukheli) has been an independent artist up until now, but she smashed local records with her independently released seven track EP, Element. She’s since become the first independent female artist to ever reach #1 on the Apple Music sub-Saharan African charts, and her hit song You’re the One has around 2,7 million views on YouTube.
The Pretoria native first started singing in her pre-school choir at age six and has taken part in multiple talent show competitions, even winning a gold medal at 2014’s 8th World Choir Games in Latvia.
Signing with the US-based label has put her in good company, as Columbia also represents major artists like Beyonce, Celine Dion, Adele, John Legend and Alicia Keys.
Managing Director of Sony Music Entertainment Africa, Sean Watson, said: “Elaine is unquestionably deserving of the recognition she’s getting for her music.
“It’s not chance that got her to where she is, it’s talent and hard work. We love that about her and we can’t wait to work alongside her to help share her incredible music around the globe.”
We’re beyond excited to see what this young artist achieves next, and to celebrate we’ll watch her new music video for her song Risky on repeat!
