Our favourite local green beauty brands
With great beauty comes great responsibility ; )
It’s never been more important to look after our environment or support local businesses than it is right now, and luckily for us those two causes often go hand-in-hand when it comes to South Africa’s amazing local beauty industry.
As the environmental and social impact of single-use plastic, unsustainably sourced ingredients and animal-testing is becoming impossible to ignore, numerous local entrepreneurs have come forward with innovative products that tick all the necessary green boxes, offering healthier, more responsible goods for your beauty regime!
Here are just a few of them:
Believing that “simplicity is the new awesome”, Lulu & Marula has created a line of plant-based, multi-tasking products that will give you healthy, happy, glowing skin. The brand doesn’t test on animals, uses minimal glass and cardboard packaging, and aims to empower local businesses using ingredients and packaging that is, wherever possible, made and sourced in and around South Africa. What’s not to like?
I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing Stella Ciolli, a qualified engineer and founder of SKOON., and I was inspired by her incredible work and business journey. After reading an article that said, on average, a woman can host up to 515 toxic ingredients in her body just from the chemicals in her cosmetics, Stella decided to found her own skincare company. SKOON. formulations are free from toxins and synthetics, relying on the Cape floral kingdom for natural solutions, and neither the raw ingredients or final products are ever tested on animals. By 2022 the brand aims to phase out of plastic packaging entirely, investing in 100% glass packaging.
Naturals Beauty is a family business founded by mother Tanya du Bois after she discovered how many artificial substances go into commercial body products while looking for safe products to use on her children. The brand produces ethical, effective and affordable products for all ages, ranging from babies all the way to mature skin. All the products are hand-crafted in small batches and are free from parabens, petrochemicals and synthetic fragrances.
This colourful (and affordable) local beauty brand only uses sustainably sourced, naturally harvested botanical ingredients in its Beauty Without Cruelty accredited products. Aiming to support local suppliers, they also use certified organic, locally sourced ingredients whenever possible.
I’m also a big fan of their in-store recycling initiative that allows you to return your clean, used Hey Gorgeous jars and bottles to be autoclaved and recycled. On top of that, they also donate R1 for every item returned to Clean C, a non-profit organisation working with environment education and employment initiatives. (This drop-off system is available at the La Lucia Mall, Willowbridge and Claremont stores, as well as their dispatch in Diep River)
Cannabis wellness brand GoodLeaf has recently expanded into the realm of beauty with it’s CBD-infused skincare range.
The collection (consisting of 12 products) is broken up into three categories: “Soothe”, “Nourish” and “Cleanse”, and all of the products harness the anti-inflammatory and moisturising properties of CBD and a wide range of African botanicals. These include green rooibos, baobab and marula, among others. CBD is generally known to have great effects on skin, including reducing damage like puffiness, blemishes and redness while also clearing texture and aiding hydration.
P.S. Don’t worry, these products are 100% legal, traceable and safe for use.
Founded in 2010 by sisters Christine Buchanan and Louiza Rademan, local beauty brand Oh-lief’s adorable name references olive oil, the main ingredient found in all their products.
Oh-lief’s range of certified, natural and organic products are made from 100% natural and organic, raw ingredients, and are sourced locally. The products range from natural and organic baby products to body care and even sunscreen. They are Beauty Without Cruelty accredited, vegetarian with some vegan options, and their full sunscreen range has been endorsed by the Cancer Association of South Africa.
In a break from skincare, we have to give the Zero Bar a shoutout! This delightfully simple and clever product is basically a hair washing solution that uses minimal water. The zero waste bar is plastic and cruelty free, using locally-sourced ingredients, and with a tiny bit of water becomes a creamy foam that rinses out quickly and easily.
The bar can last you through between 55 and 70 hair washes, seriously reducing your water wastage. In fact, they are not only shampoo bars, you can also purchase a hair and body bar for multi-purposing washing!
