Epic African series ‘Blood Psalms’ to hit South Africa’s small screens
'Game of Thrones' who?
We’re all for locally produced shows and seeing South African talent shine, which is why we can’t wait for the highly-anticipated Blood Psalms to hit the small screen.
“This is epic, authentic, original African storytelling like never before,” said Yolisa Pahle, MultiChoice Group CEO for General Entertainment. Blood Psalms will be broadcast on Showmax in 2021, and we are beyond excited.
Created by award-winning producers Layla Swart and Jahmil X.T Qubeka, the 10-part epic is inspired by a Xhosa legend. It tells the story of fierce African princess Zazi (played by Bokang Phelane), who must battle a world-ending prophecy to lead her people through endless wars and politics. Right? Sound just like the binge-worthy series we need after a seriously rough 2020.
This mystical series, dubbed the “the Game of Thrones of Africa”, features over 50 local actors — yas! The cast includes Andile Nebulane (as King Ntuka), Thando Thabethe (God Heka), Faith Baloyi (Queen Assilli), Faniswa Yisa (Mother Superior), Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa (Umna), and many more. It was filmed across the Eastern Cape, Gauteng and North West.
According to Swart, who founded Yellowbone Productions with Qubeka, each of the actors selected have their own special ability to translate the magical epic to the small screen.
“The story of Blood Psalms not only entertains but also contributes to the preservation of African culture and languages as authentically told by Africans, to be enjoyed by the world.”
