A love letter to my vacuum cleaner
You know you're growing up when a vacuum cleaner gets you all revved up.
Our co-founder Paula-Ann Smit reviews her new Bennett Read Aerovac Vacuum Cleaner.
Our romance was unplanned, spur of the moment; the best introductions usually are.
I’ve never been one for commitment, especially not one that requires spending over R200 on something I can’t eat, wear or travel to. But there you were, in the aisle of Pick n Pay’s electronics aisle.
Nationwide lockdown had just been announced, and I was already mid-breakdown about working from home and the thought of my messy (like, really messy) shoebox-sized flat. Hence my venture to that specific aisle, a place of once uncharted territory for me.
Of course, our relationship was fast-tracked by the other man in my life, Lewis. I love him to bits, but boy can that guy shed. Cat. Fur. Everywhere. Initially, the plan was to find something cheap, something…fleeting. You know, like a dustpan. But there you were, in my (price) league and “new and improved” – men rarely are. The fact that you were lightweight, yet powerful, and could convert into a hand vac in mere seconds was a bonus: I was really just interested in your personality, but your black and orange finishes made you like, really cute.
It’s been three months, and we’re definitely still in the honeymoon phase. I have a feeling the relationship is one to last, you have a two-year guarantee, after all. Did I mention how much I adore the fact that you have no filter? It’s all easy-clean, just tip you over and there you go.
Look, I don’t want to scare you but I think this is love. I’ve seen how the other half live and I never want to go back to flimsy brooms and said dustpan. I do, however, see us outgrowing each other in the future. When I have an actual home I might upgrade to someone more mature – but that’s not likely to happen soon. Unless I get scouted in the homeware aisle and get my own reality show. But this is not likely to happen because, as mentioned before, I hardly ever visit that aisle (for no other reasons than this will I not be scouted. My talent is astronomical and I really must manifest my destiny).
Thank you, is the point I’m getting to. You’ve seen me at my best, but most of the time you’ve seen me at my worst (queue pyjamas, unwashed hair and ew is that a pimple?). Working from home has been a blast, especially with your 600W motor.
Let’s enjoy it while it lasts,
